Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is the Sri Lanka Nurses' Association's principal statutory event, bringing together the general membership once every financial year to review the Association's progress, elect leadership, and set the direction for the nursing profession in Sri Lanka. As the Association's flagship gathering, the AGM unifies the voices of nurses across the country and reinforces SLNA's role as the national leader in fostering professional excellence in the public interest.
In keeping with SLNA's mission to raise the profile of nursing in Sri Lanka and strengthen nursing leadership, the AGM serves as the forum where members exercise their democratic rights, hold the Executive Council accountable, and celebrate the collective achievements of the nursing community over the preceding year.
Purpose of the AGM
- Presentation of the Association's annual activity report by the Executive Council
- Presentation of the audited financial statement for the preceding financial year by the Treasurer
- Election of Executive Council members through secret ballot, held once every two years
- Discussion and approval of resolutions affecting the Association and its members
- An opportunity for members to raise questions, propose initiatives, and network with peers from across the nursing profession
Constitutional Provisions Governing the AGM
The conduct of the Annual General Meeting is governed by the SLNA Constitution, which sets out the following requirements:
- The Annual General Meeting must be held every year, within three months of the end of each financial year, on a date, time, and at a venue decided by the Association's Executive Council.
- Notice of the meeting, together with the agenda and the report of the previous meeting, must be sent to the general membership at least four weeks before the meeting.
- At the Annual General Meeting held after every two consecutive years, an election must be conducted to select all members of the Executive Council.
- All such elections must be conducted by secret ballot.
- The term of office of the Executive Council is two years.
- The Treasurer must present the Association's audited financial report for the preceding year to the general membership at the Annual General Meeting.
Who Can Attend
The AGM is open to all members of the Sri Lanka Nurses' Association in good standing. As per the Constitution, members are notified at least four weeks in advance so they can review the agenda and the previous meeting's report before attending. Members are encouraged to participate actively, as the AGM is the key mechanism through which the Association remains accountable to its membership and continues to strengthen relationships, communication, and cooperation within the nursing profession, both locally and with international counterparts.
